New Surgical Gloves Enhance Radiation Safety for Clinicians
September 22, 2026 · News Release

Recent advancements in protective surgical gear offer increased safety for clinicians exposed to radiation during image-guided procedures. Mölnlycke Health Care US has introduced a new range of surgical gloves, Biogel Radiation Protection, designed to minimize hand exposure to scattered radiation during fluoroscopically guided and other image-dependent surgeries.
During such procedures, clinicians' hands are exposed to radiation at levels up to 1,000 times higher than other body parts. Despite this significant risk, radiation-attenuating gloves are utilized in only 10% of applicable cases. In contrast, lead aprons and shields are used in 99% of scenarios. The limited use of protective gloves puts healthcare workers at risk of radiation-related injuries, such as skin damage, deeper tissue injuries, and an increased long-term cancer risk. A clinical survey indicated that 31% of surgeons reported dermatologist-diagnosed radiation-induced skin injuries to their hands.
Biogel’s new glove line combines dexterity with radiation attenuation, maintaining the performance standards expected from surgical gloves while providing enhanced protection. Composed of a proprietary mix of tungsten and polyisoprene, the gloves promise the comfort, fit, and tactile sensitivity required in surgical environments. These gloves aim to address a critical safety gap noted by Dr. Ashish Sahai, M.D., FAAOS, who commented on the delay in adopting adequate hand protection compared to the nearly universal use of lead aprons and thyroid shields. “Our hands are our most valuable asset," Dr. Sahai stated. "These new gloves offer an option for wearing radiation protection while preserving the dexterity and tactile sensitivity modern surgery demands."
Research underscores the potential of radiation-attenuating gloves to reduce hand radiation exposure by 58% to 80%, depending on the material and procedural context. Mölnlycke's Biogel Radiation Protection gloves are fully FDA 510(k)-cleared for direct patient contact, supporting surgeons and clinicians in environments where radiation exposure is a routine aspect of care.
This innovation aligns with Mölnlycke’s mission to provide healthcare professionals with tools to perform optimally while ensuring their safety. The introduction of Biogel Radiation Protection gloves signifies a pivotal step forward in protecting clinicians without compromising surgical efficacy.
