Carestream Reimagines the DR Experience, Bringing New Design, Intelligence, and Confidence to RSNA

At RSNA 2025, Carestream showcases its continued evolution in innovative digital radiography (DR) solutions in South Hall Booth #2154. Building on the DRX-Evolution line launched 15 years ago, this year, the company showcases its latest innovations in DR including the DRX-Evolution Plus with a new-to-the-industry curved wall stand rail design, Easy OTC motorized positioning, and PowerReady Dock charging bin. Over the years Carestream has added dual-energy and tomosynthesis technologies, ImageView and Pneumothorax detection, Smart Room AI features, among other improved workflow capabilities.

“What began as an adaptable DR platform has become an intelligent ecosystem—uniting workflow efficiency, ergonomic design, and image precision,” explains Eric Smith, product marketing manager, Digital Radiology (DR) Room Systems at Carestream.

Workflow considerations are being widely discussed in the exhibit hall, and are a major part of DR innovation, Smith says, noting that finding “small niches within the application of the tool,” can help users be more efficient. While X-ray isn’t as complex as other modalities on display at RSNA, it is the one most frequently used modality, so making minor workflow improvements can significantly reduce operating cost over time, says Steve Romocki, product line director Digital Radiology (DR) Room Systems.

Carestream’s DR smart room solutions meet provider needs for exam time savings, reduced fatigue for technologists, and less patient wait time, as well as improved image clarity. The exhibited technologies below demonstrate how this is achieved under the overarching Carestream Intelligence (Ci) philosophy.

A Smart System

In meeting customer demands for both versatility and space optimization, the DRX-Evolution Plus, a wall stand with curved rail, is on display. While not yet available for sale in the U.S., this progressive technology essentially integrates three different DR room configurations into one room to adapt to space limitations and diverse workflows across settings.

Now that we can come around the curve, it fits in a tighter space…[but with] the flexibility that you would have in a bigger room. This also helps enable long-length imaging exams such as scoliosis and full-length leg exams,” explains Romocki. “You can do that in one location, and it gives you the capability to position the patient more quickly and more easily.”

The DRX-Evolution Plus ensures adaptability in diverse scenarios including specialized care needed for pediatric patients.

“The ability to put a child at the end of a table more comfortably is enhanced with the curve rail,” he explains, adding that Carestream’s pediatric option for image processing results in improved images and the possibility of lower doses for these patients.

Experience First

The DR’s ease of versatility is also experienced through a new motor assist feature that performs adjustments automatically—no manual input required for positioning.

“You can press a button to center the X-ray tube in position in front of the wall stand at the right distance for the exam,” explains Romocki.

The motorized ergonomic design also enables “grab and go” movement of the overhead tube (OTC)–allowing users to easily move it around as motor-assist kicks in, a “big time—and effort-saver,” he says

Charging Setup

When considering key workflow needs of radiologic technologists, a charged detector is critical. Whether the user has an emergency study or a pediatric case where readiness is imperative, an out-of-bucky uncharged detector disrupts the entire exam process. Carestream developed the PowerReady Dock, a floor-standing charging bin that can be wall-mounted to ensure detectors are charged and functional right when they are needed.

“In a world where seconds matter, PowerReady Dock ensures every detector is charged, clean, and ready to perform,” explains Smith.

Downtime or battery swaps interrupt performance, hindering readiness and a smooth workflow. While placing the detectors within a dedicated charging dock seems like a small effort, the benefits have a huge impact on operational efficiency and technologist satisfaction, Smith says.

The Ci Vibe

The Carestream DR design innovations and smart room technologies on display at RSNA would not be possible without Carestream Intelligence (Ci), an umbrella term describing “the brain beyond the system.”

From pre-exposure workflow automation to image intelligence post-exposure, the Ci ecosystem enables consistent imaging, and automated and standardized processes to optimize workflows that can potentially lead to reductions in both retakes and radiation dose—facilitating an optimal radiographer workflow. The experience, or “vibe” as Smith calls it, is unique to Carestream as it is comprised of features utilizing both AI and proprietary non-AI algorithms, running with updated ImageView software.

“Carestream Intelligence (Ci) integrates smart automation before exposure and intelligent image optimization after exposure—creating a closed-loop system that empowers technologists and radiologists alike,” says Smith.

Workflow automation occurring pre-exposure includes the following features for workflow consistency and reduced variability:

• Smart Auto-positioning, Detector and Exposure Chamber overlays for accuracy
• Position Monitoring,
• Smart Technique,
• Smart Collimation,
• Video Assist and long-length imaging, and
• Audio Assist for technologists.

Post-exposure highlights addressing image intelligence, quality control, and dose exposure needs include:

• Smart Noise Cancellation (SNC) and Smart Grid,
• Dual Energy (DE) and bone suppression,
• Pneumothorax detection,
• Ci Fine Rotation,
• pediatric imaging and image enhancement, and
• consistent orientation and image standardization.

The Smart Noise Cancellation, where technologists can potentially lower radiation dose without compromising on image quality compared to standard image processing, is particularly useful in pediatric and neonatal cases.

In addition, Carestream is excited to debut a new functionality, Detector-based Exposure Control (DEC).

“In this new feature…exposure control elements are built into the detector so that you don't have to have the detector inside the bucky, but it can be out on the table or under a patient anywhere they are,” explains Romocki, noting improved image quality and patient safety.
